The New River Water Trail Expansion Project is funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission in partnership with NRVRC, Pulaski County, City of Radford, Montgomery County, and Giles County.


Goal:

Our goal is to expand on the tools that Giles County has created over the past 10 years, to create a cohesive water trail experience in the New River Valley. Throughout 2021 we will be exploring the New River Water Trail expansion with the goal of applying for implementation funding in 2022.


How to Get Involved:

The New River is a valuable natural resource for our region, providing us with scenic views, award-winning recreation, wildlife habitat, and support to many local businesses.

    The New River Water Trail™ currently stretches 37 miles flowing through Southwest Virginia in beautiful Giles County. The water trail is visitors and residents’ gateway to river activities like award-winning fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, SUP, and swimming, but also connects with hiking trails, wildlife viewing, local lodging and dining options, and the immense variety of experiences waiting in Giles County.

    ReNew the New is an annual river clean-up, typically held at the end of summer, which invites individuals and groups to participate in cleaning up our New River all across the New River Valley Region.

    The New River Mile Marker system is a collaboration with the New River Watershed Roundtable and each of the localities along the New River. Our river headwaters, in Boone, North Carolina is mile 0. By the time the New River enters the New River Valley in Pulaski County, you are at mile 82. As the New River winds with our region, it adds almost 100 miles of river, leaving Giles County into West Virginia at mile 170. The mile marker system is an important component of useability and safety.
